I’m Denee Salazar. I’m a wife, a work at home mother of four, a friend and the person people call when they need help in the garden, need to prepare a special dinner or need their toilet fixed in a hurry. That really doesn’t begin to describe who I am though.
I began construction work at the tender age of 4 and for a while though my name was ‘Getme’ as in, “Getme, phillips head,” or “Getme, 3/8″ drillbit!” I later realized my dad wasn’t calling me Getme he was just asking, in his very gruff construction worker way, to fetch said item. By the time I was 10 I could fix a leaky pipe, hang drapery hardware level and build very nice built in shelving. By 12, I was hanging drywall and learning to mud (plaster for those of you that don’t know). My dad’s goal was to be sure I was never taken advantage of by an unscrupulous handy man. After working on the project of the day with my dad we would head out to throw around the pigskin, play paintball or kickball.
Meanwhile, my Papaw taught me all about organic gardening. I learned how to rear chickens and turn their manure into compost, fix a barn roof and learn when the vegetables were trying to tell me they needed something. After bringing in the harvest, my Mamaw taught me how to cook what we grew. She taught me some basics of canning and baking. There was nothing like fresh homemade Georgia Peach ice cream after a day of working the land.
My mother wanted to instill grace. I’m certain it was to balance out my tom boy nature. I’m very grateful for her making me walk up and down the hallway with an Encyclopedia Britannica balanced on my head and high heels on my feet. She taught me how to apply makeup and paint the fingers on my left hand but never could quite teach me how to fix my hair. Oh well, can’t win them all.
Fast forward a few years and here we are. I graduated from the University of Florida, College of Agricultural and Life Sciences ( #GoGATORS #UFCALS ) with a degree in Horticultural Sciences and a minor in Soil and Water Sciences, started a business installing and maintaining custom organic gardens. Just as business was really picking up, my husband was relocated and away to Illinois we went.
Now you know the WHO. The WHAT is pretty straight forward.
For a couple years now friends have been asking me to start a blog to keep track of gardening tips, recipes, home repair how-to’s and the like. Finally, after a conversation with a very dear friend, I was inspired enough to get off my keister and start writing!
So there you have it. I am simply a wife, a mom, a friend, a farmer, a cook, a do-it-yourselfer, a lady…
I am simply Denee. What would you like to talk about?
